Winter Olympics 2030: Salt Lake City and Sapporo in competition for the right to host

Salt Lake City in the US and Sapporo in Japan will be the only cities to bid for the 2030 Winter Olympics.

The one no longer competing will be Vancouver after Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sports Lisa Beer announced that Canada has decided to withdraw its candidacy.

“More than a year we are evaluating a potential proposal to host the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2030″, — the minister said. — “I know that the prospect of these games excites athletes and sports fans. However, the responsibility is to weigh the benefits against the possible costs and risks of the project.”

“There are billions of dollars of direct costs in this project, as well as potential bond and compensation risks that could jeopardize our government's ability to deal with the pressures that British Columbians are now facing. After careful consideration, the province refuses to support this proposal.”

The decision on the host city will be made in the first quarter of next year at a meeting of the International Olympic Committee among its members in Mumbai, India. As a reminder, the next winter games will be held in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo in Italy.

At the Summer Games, we already know the venues for the next three Olympiads: Paris will host the Olympic Games in 2024, Los Angeles will be the host city in 2028, and four years later, in 2032, the best athletes in the world will come to Brisbane, Australia.
