Head of the WHO European Office Hans Kluge announced a new wave of coronavirus caused by Omicron substrains, in particular BA.2 and BA.5.

Kluge urged countries Europe to act now and quickly take measures regarding vaccination and the wearing of protective masks.

“It is clear that we are in a situation similar to that of last summer. This time, the ongoing wave of COVID-19 is caused by substrains of the omicron variant, specifically BA.2 and BA.5. Therefore, the WHO Regional Office for Europe is issuing an autumn-winter strategy to combat COVID–19 and other respiratory viruses to help prepare for the coming waves of infection. It will be too late to wait for autumn to act,” Hans Kluge said in a statement.
