WHO says new strain of Covid is most contagious

The Omicron XBB.1.5 coronavirus strain, which has become the dominant strain in the United States in just a few weeks, could lead to a new wave of infections, a World Health Organization spokesman told reporters on Wednesday.
< br /> “We are concerned about its growth, in particular in some countries in Europe and the northeastern United States, where XBB.1.5 has quickly replaced other circulating sub-options”, – said Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO technical officer for Covid-19.

In the US, this sub-option has increased from 4 percent to 40 percent in just a few weeks, the White House Covid-19 response coordinator tweeted on Wednesday. Ashish Jah.

But the WHO has not yet determined whether XBB.1.5 is heavier than other circulating sub-variants.

Van Kerkhove reported that the increase in hospital admissions in the northeast cannot yet be attributed to XBB.1.5, as other respiratory illnesses, including influenza, may be partly responsible.

Jha advised people to get a bivalent booster, get tested before attending large gatherings or before meeting elderly or immunocompromised people, and wearing a high-quality mask in crowded indoor areas.

According to Wang Kerkhove, WHO is working on an analysis of the severity of the new strain, which will be published in the coming days.
