WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has declared the spread of monkeypox a global public health emergency.

The NY Times reports.

there is an outbreak that has spread rapidly around the world through new modes of transmission about which we understand too little and which meets the criteria for a public health emergency,” the WHO chief said.

The WHO declaration signals a public health risk requiring a coordinated international response. This may encourage WHO member countries to invest more in fighting the outbreak, sharing vaccines, treatments.

It is noted that over 16,000 cases of monkeypox infection have been reported outside of Africa, and the virus has reached 75 countries and territories.
