 Violence in Ecuador: five police officers killed

A state of emergency and curfews have been declared in two provinces of Ecuador following a series of attacks that killed five policemen.

President Guillermo Lasso said attacks by increasingly powerful gangs The drug traffickers are a declaration of war.

Nine separate attacks took place in the coastal provinces of Guayas and Esmeraldas on Tuesday, according to the Air Force. There were six explosions in the city of Guayaquil and two policemen were killed in an attack on a patrol car in the suburbs. Three more officers were shot dead in and around the city on the same day.

Three explosions were also reported in the province of Esmeraldas, where prisoners took seven prison staff hostage. They were later released after negotiations.

President Lasso imposed 45-day emergency measures in two states, restricting freedom of assembly and movement.
