The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has finally certified the NuScale Power Small Modular Reactor
The document was made public in the Federal Register and became effective on February 21, 2023. NuScale's small modular reactor becomes the first SMR design to be certified by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the seventh reactor design.
“SMR is no longer an abstract concept. They are real and ready to be deployed thanks to the hard work of NuScale, the university community, our national labs, industry partners, and NRC”, – said Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy Katherine Huff.
The design is an advanced SMR where each power module is capable of generating 50 MW of electricity without emissions. Now NuScale is working on increasing this figure to 77 MW.
