 Ukraine and the United States will build a small modular reactor

The United States and Ukraine are planning to build a small modular reactor. This was announced by Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Galushchenko.

“In the framework of the 27th UN Climate Conference (COP27), Special Envoy of the President of the United States for Climate John Kerry and Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Galushchenko announced the start of a pilot project for the construction of in Ukraine of a small modular reactor (SMR)",– Oksana Markarova, Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States, wrote on Facebook.

According to her, the partners participating in the pilot project are the international consortium of the Argonne National Laboratory, NNEGC Energoatom, the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine and the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and radiation safety, as well as the private companies Clark Seed, Doosan Enerbility, FuelCell Energy, IHI Corporation, JGC Corporation, Power, Samsung C&T and Starfire Energy.

In addition, Special Envoy Kerry announced the creation of a new initiative “Phoenix Project” aimed at accelerating the transition of coal-fired power plants in Central and Eastern Europe to SMR.
