Canadian scientists have discovered two new minerals in a piece of the Somali El Ali meteorite weighing 70 grams.
The discovery was made by scientists from the University of Alberta, HB reports.
One of the minerals was named after the metetorite elalite, the author – elkinstantonite after Lindy Elkins-Tanton, vice president of the Interplanetary Initiative of Arizona State University.
Both of these minerals were previously obtained synthetically. Therefore, scientists were able to quickly identify the substances found on the meteorite. According to scientists, the minerals are iron phosphates.
