Search and rescue personnel from all over the world are racing against the clock to reach the survivors of the worst disaster to hit Turkey since 1939.K On Tuesday evening, the death toll from a series of earthquakes that hit 10 provinces in Turkey and at least five more in Syria exceeded 6,300 people.

24 hours after a strong 7.8 quake.

A second 7.7 quake struck a few kilometers to the north less than nine hours later; a few hours later, a third earthquake of magnitude 6.0 occurred.

About 24 hours later, a fourth earthquake of magnitude 5.8 occurred in the same area, followed by a shock of almost the same magnitude.
In total, more than 240 aftershocks continued to shake the region, many of them stronger than 4.5 on the Richter scale.
