The US Congress plans to discuss the impact of cryptocurrency mining on the environment.
The Committee on Energy and Trade will prepare a list of participants in the hearing. It may take place as early as the end of January. Industry representatives will answer questions about the energy consumption of cryptocurrencies based on the Proof-of-Work algorithm.
The committee became interested in the topic of mining after the ban on this activity in China and the move of some miners to New York state. In October, over 70 environmental groups petitioned Congress to begin regulating mining.
In early December, Senator Elizabeth Warren asked New York-based mining company Greenidge to provide data on their activities.
