The International Congress of Mathematicians announced Ukrainian Marina Vyazovskaya one of the winners of the most prestigious mathematical award – the Fields Prize -2022 (Fields Medal).
“Marina Vyazovskaya was awarded the Fields Medal in 2022 for proving that the E8 lattice provides the densest packing of identical spheres in 8 dimensions, and for her subsequent contributions to solving related extremal and interpolation problems in Fourier analysis”, – MKM reported.
The list of laureates also includes Frenchman Hugo Duminil-Copen, Briton James Maynard and American mathematician of Korean origin Jun Hu.
The International Congress of Mathematicians, which traditionally awards the Fields Prize , was supposed to be held in St. Petersburg, but after the start of Russia's aggression against Ukraine, the city was deprived of the right to host it, and the forum was moved to an online format.
So far, citizens of Ukraine have not yet received the Fields Prize.
The Fields Medal is an award given to two, three or four mathematicians at the International Congress of Mathematicians, which is held every four years under the auspices of the International Mathematical Union.
This medal is considered the most prestigious Honors in Mathematics and is awarded to young mathematicians under forty for significant contributions to science. The amount of the award is 15,000 Canadian dollars. The founder of the award was Canadian mathematician John Charles Fields.
