Russians abducted general director of Zaporozhye nuclear power plant

Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine on the kidnapping of the Director General of ZNPP by Russian occupiers

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine strongly condemns the unlawful detention of the Director General of Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant Igor Murashov by Russian occupiers.

“This crime is another manifestation of state terrorism on the part of Russia and a gross violation of international law. Russia must immediately release the General Director of ZNPP. We call on the international community, in particular the UN, the IAEA and the G7, to also take decisive action to this end,” – The statement reads.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry notes the immediate need to maximize the efforts of the world community to demilitarize and de-occupy the ZNPP and return it to Ukrainian control as the only way to eliminate the current threats to nuclear security.

“We expect increased pressure on the aggressor state in order to stop shelling by the Russian occupiers of the Zaporizhzhya NPP and other civilian nuclear facilities on the territory of Ukraine, to prevent pressure and repression against the personnel of the Zaporizhzhya NPP and their families,” the department emphasizes.

Later it became known that the International Atomic Energy Agency managed to find Murashov, who was kidnapped by the invaders.

“After receiving information about the detention of Igor Murashov, Director General of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, the IAEA contacted the relevant authorities and was notified that Murashov has been temporarily detained,” the message says.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said that the agency, in accordance with its mandate on nuclear safety, was actively seeking clarification and hoped for a quick and satisfactory resolution of this issue.

As a reminder, Igor Murashov, Director General of the Zaporozhye NPP, was detained by a Russian patrol about the road from the station to Energodar. The occupiers stopped the car, detained him and took him blindfolded in an unknown direction.
