< p>

The Supreme Court of India has ordered the release of one of the convicts involved in the 1991 assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Gandhi was killed by a suicide bomber.

BBC reports.

Convicted A. G. Perarivalan spent many years in prison. In 1998, he was sentenced to death but later commuted.

Perarivalan was arrested at the age of 19. He was convicted of acquiring the batteries that were used in the bomb intended to assassinate Rajiv Gandhi.

Three justices of the Supreme Court of India invoked a section of the Indian Constitution that gives them extraordinary powers to “administer full justice in any case”, and decided to release the person involved in the case.
