Last night, the Department of Health acknowledged for the first time that initial estimates for the Omicron strain were slightly over the top. Previously, the Ministry of Health assumed that for every 1,000 people infected with Omicron, two will endure it in a severe form. However, it is now clear that these forecasts were far from reality.
However, the ministry still believes that they did the right thing by predicting extreme scenarios. Part of their job, they say, is also to present worst-case scenarios to decision makers.
Already this weekend, the fifth wave will subside. The peak of the disease has passed. The Ministry of Health is also considering the possibility of abolishing the “green standard” in the coming weeks, despite its epidemiological effectiveness.
