The female of this species of insect

There are many phenomena in the natural world, one of which is the change of sex roles in females and males of Neotrogla.

a gynosome organ resembling a penis, which is inserted into a special depression on the abdomen of a male for reproduction.

Hokkaido University entomologist Zishin Cheng and colleagues used microcomputed tomography to create 3D models of copulating winged insects from caves in Brazil to figure out how their sex organs function to determine how this genital change happened.

According to scientists, the gynosome is a more complex organ than the pseudopenis, with specific muscles and tubes to match its unique suction function.

Using hooks at the base of the gynosome, females can cling to males for up to 70 hours. One set of muscles helps the organ enter the male's peritoneum, where it swells up. Another set of muscles contract the organ so that it can place the male's sperm into storage cells inside the female's body. With two sperm storage organs, Neotrogla females can store twice as much sperm.

“The most likely explanation is that the female penis evolved through sexual selection for more seminal food,” Cheng explained.
