The city of Haarlem in the Netherlands may be the first in the world to ban most meat advertising in public places due to its climate impact.
According to the BBC, the city is going impose a ban in 2024. The proposal was put forward by the GroenLinks political party.
“Meat is very bad for the environment. We can't tell people there's a climate crisis and encourage them to buy products that are part of it,” said Ziggy Clazes, adviser to GroenLinks.
The city of 160,000 says more it has not been decided whether sustainable meat will be included in the advertising ban.
Meat producers have reacted very strongly to the future advertising ban.
“The authorities are going too far telling people what's best for them,” the Central Organization for the Meat Sector said.
The right-wing BVNL called it “an unacceptable violation of free enterprise.”
