Tel Aviv exercise scenario: chemical attack on light rail line

More than 1,000 members of the security and emergency forces took part in a joint exercise conducted on Tuesday by the Ministry of Defense, the armed forces, the police, the fire departments, the Ministry of Health and the Tel Aviv municipality , as well as several hundred extras simulating victims with varying degrees of injuries.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the exercises were held at three main points of the new light rail system – in Tel Aviv, Bat Yam and Ramat Gan – at ground and underground stations. The main part of the exercises took place at the Allenby station in Tel Aviv.

In addition to simulating the spread of the chemical on platforms and trains, experts also practiced response to shelling and bombing. The chemical attack is part of a series of “National Terror Preparedness” drills.

The ministry said the drills were preplanned, meaning they were not linked to a new assessment or threat. Dozens of foreign observers also came to watch the exercise “as part of the international training and cooperation processes,” the ministry said.

Police blocked several major roads in three cities for several hours during the exercise, which caused heavy traffic in central Israel.
