In civil war-torn Syria, clashes broke out between the forces of the regime of Bashar al-Assad and rebels in the earthquake-affected region.

It is specified that on the night of February 17, Assad's forces fired on the outskirts of the city of Al-Atarib. There were also clashes with the use of heavy machine guns on the nearby front line.

In addition, clashes took place near the city of Sarakib. Government forces also shelled the outskirts of two villages in the province of Hama.

The head of the monitoring center, Rami Abdulrahman, said that 235 people in the city and nearby areas were killed as a result of the earthquake. In total, in the north-west of the country, according to the UN, more than 4,400 people died due to a natural disaster.
