Swedish airline Braathens Regional Airlines has announced that it has made the first flight of a commercial aircraft powered entirely by sustainable aviation fuel.
The carrier carried out a test flight from Malmö to Bromma near Stockholm using an ATR aircraft in cooperation with PAF fuel manufacturer Neste Oyj.
Clean fuel is seen as the most realistic way to decarbonise aviation.
ATR and Braathens aim to complete the certification of an aircraft powered by 100% SAF eco-fuel by 2025.
When used in its purest form, Neste SAF eco-fuel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 80% compared to aviation kerosene.
