Albania and Northern Macedonia to fulfil the conditions required for commencement of negotiations on the accession of these countries to the EU. This is stated in the communiqué of the European Commission in connection with approval of annual evaluation of the implementation of reforms in the countries of the Western Balkans and Turkey, reports the Chronicle.info with reference to the Correspondent.
“Last year was a year of positive change in the region. Albania and Northern Macedonia has demonstrated a strong commitment to move towards the EU and achieved concrete results, which should be irreversible. That’s why we recommend today to the Council of the EU began negotiations on EU accession with Albania and Northern Macedonia,” – said the head of EU diplomacy Federica Mogherini.
In turn, the European Commissioner for enlargement and neighbourhood policy Johannes Hahn believes that “Albania and Northern Macedonia took the opportunity to implement reforms, especially in the areas that the EU Council has identified as key in June 2018.”
“Due to the fact that there has been significant progress, and requirements to significantly advance the Commission today recommended that the EU Council to start accession negotiations with Albania and Northern Macedonia,” – said in a communique.
Later at a press conference, MS Mogherini stressed that the decision was made after “careful and fair procedures for assessment of the situation.” She recalled that the start of negotiations on accession of these countries into the EU is the first stage in a long process. “We are not talking about how to join tomorrow,” said Mogherini.
For his part, the Khan at the press conference said that this is a complex procedure, which in the case of earlier EU accession countries could not be completed quickly. “It’s a long process. We’re talking about a few years,” said a member of the European Commission.
He also urged not to forget that every country has its pace in negotiations to join the European Union.
