Cardiology at the Integrated Cardiology Center at Shaare Zedek Medical Center Nathan Cohen, a 71-year-old patient with severe arterial calcification, was saved in Jerusalem.

According to The Jerusalem Post, Nathan Cohen became the first person in Israel to have their vessels cleaned using a tiny crown covered with diamond shavings. The patient was unable to perform conventional catheterization or open-heart surgery to treat arterial calcification.

Cardiologists used this innovative approach to save a patient who was also battling lung cancer, another complication preventing " cleaning” clogged arteries by conventional means.

The technology assumes that a crown with diamond chips rotates inside the artery at a tremendous speed – about 100,000 revolutions per minute, which allows “cleaning” vessel. The operation was performed by Dr. Danny Dvir, Director of Interventional Cardiology.

“The operation was successful and the patient was discharged home today in excellent condition; now he can continue to receive the best treatment for lung cancer,” the doctor said.
