Perfumes, designer clothes and sex pills were found Tuesday in the apartment that was the last hideout of Sicilian mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro, court sources said a day after his arrest.
The apartment where the mafia was hiding is located in a modest building near the center of Campobello di Mazar in the western Sicilian province of Trapani.
Investigators found clothes, shoes, a well-stocked refrigerator and receipts from a restaurant there, according to judicial sources. They also found pills to increase potency.
“He had an ordinary life, he went to the supermarket for groceries himself”,– said Judge Paolo Guido, who conducted the investigation.
Messina Denaro is known for his passion for luxury goods, including designer clothes and accessories. Police said he was wearing a watch worth 35,000 euros at the time of his arrest.
Messina Denaro, 60, who was caught on Monday in a private hospital in Palermo after 30 years on the run, is being held in the central Italian city of L'Aquila, according to a Palermo prosecutor.
Monday was taken to the hospital of La Maddalena in Palermo from Campobello di Mazara for cancer treatment. His alleged assistant Giovanni Luppino, who was arrested with him, lived in the city. Police also prosecuted doctor Alfonso Tumbarello on suspicion of aiding a mafia boss.
Messina Denaro was sentenced to 20 life sentences in trials in absentia for orchestrating a series of criminal murders that resulted in the killing of fight prosecutors with mafia Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino in 1992.
Despite suffering from cancer, the prosecutor's office said that Messina Denaro is healthy enough to serve time in prison, where he will continue his treatment..
