Scientists from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew have named the new tree after the famous Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
According to the BBC, scientists thus wanted to honor an actor who has made a huge contribution to the preservation of tropical forests from deforestation.
The new species has the official name Uvariopsis dicaprio and grows only in the forest of Cameroon. This tree was the first plant new to science to be formally named by Kew scientists in 2022 through a publication in the scientific journal Peer J.
Uvariopsis dicaprio is a small tree with shiny yellow flowers growing on its trunk. The tree belongs to the Ylang-Ylangi family and is endangered.
