We spend a third of our life sleeping. Sleep is as important as food, water and oxygen for humans. The number of hours that we sleep at night affects our health. Experts from the National sleep Foundation (NSF) in the United States conducted a new study of sleep, and came to the conclusion that children from four months to 17 years can sleep in an hour or two less, without health threats.

In order to determine exactly how many people have to sleep at each stage of life, a team of 18 specialists from sleep, anatomy and physiology, and of Pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology joined the group and for two years was engaged in the study of the norms of sleep.

As a result, scientists have found that some people can sleep more or less than the recommended time without any side effects. But for the majority of people are too long sleep can cause serious health problems. And those who constantly lack of sleep, vulnerability to depression and cause a number of mental illnesses.

In addition, doctors have made recommendations for sleep duration for people in different age categories:

Newborns (0-3 months): sleep Range has changed to 14-17 hours a day – previously it was 12-18 hours.

Toddlers (1-2 years): sleep Range widened by one hour to 11 to 14 hours a day – previously it was 12-14 hours.

Preschoolers (3-5 years): sleep Range widened by one hour from 10 to 13 hours a day – previously it was 11-13 hours.

School-age children (6-13): sleep Range widened by one hour to 9 to 11 hours – previously it was from 10 -11 hours.

Teenagers (14-17): sleep Range widened by one hour from 8 to 10 hours a day – previously it was 8.5 to 9.5 hours.

Young people (18-25): sleep Range is 7 to 9 hours – new age category.

Adults (26-64 years): sleep Range does not change and remains 7 to 9 hours a day.

Elderly people (over 65 years): sleep Range from 7 to 8 hours – new age category.
