An international team of astronomers has discovered in the so-called desert of the planet Neptune NGTS-4b, which scientists have called “unacceptable.” Previously, scientists believed that planets of this size may not exist so close to its star, writes the Chronicle.info with reference to lenta.ua
To detect NGTS-4b, the experts used the method of transits and an array of telescopes Next-Generation Transit Survey, located on the territory Parnasskii Observatory in Chile.
The radius of the planet is 20% less than in Neptune, and its mass is 20 earth masses. The property is situated at a distance of 920 light years from our planet and makes a complete revolution around its sun for 1.3 earth days.
Astronomers say that they first found it in such an unfriendly area. We are talking about the region near the stars, where scientists had not previously found planets the size of Neptune (it is for this reason this region is called “desert Neptune”).
The objects in this region in buckets watering to powerful radiation of the star: surface temperature NGTS-4b is 1000 degrees Celsius. Because of this, light substances in the composition of exoplanets, must evaporate into space.
To confront this, the planet needs a huge gravity, and thus the great mass. Only such giants as hot Jupiters. The body is about the size of Neptune would quickly lose its substance.

But NGTS-4b is clearly not composed of solid rock. Judging by her mass and size, it has a rocky core surrounded by a shell of light substance. She may also not have a nucleus and consist entirely of water.
Astronomers have proposed two possible explanations for the existence of such planets in the wilderness Neptune. According to the first, the object could move into this area during the last million years (that is, not so long ago, judging by astronomical standards). Or a celestial body was initially more massive, and its evaporation is not yet over.
“The planet is a real tough nut to crack. It is in the area where it seemed to us that planets the size of Neptune can not survive,” says Richard West from the University of Warwick.
Today, experts are studying the data to try to find other similar objects in the desert Neptune.
