Scientists have discovered a new species of giant isopod crustacean that lives in the deepest parts of the ocean called Bathynomus yucatanensis.
These animals are incredibly large. Some individuals can reach a length of almost 50 cm.
These animals were first discovered five years ago in the Gulf of Mexico near the Yucatan Peninsula. The new individual differs from them in color and body structure.
“Compared to Bathynomus giganteus, Bathynomus yucatanensis differs in more slender body proportions and a shorter overall length … thinner and pereiopods (thoracic limbs)”, &mdash ; the researchers note.
Deep-sea giant isopods living in the marine environment, the genus Bathonymus, belong to the order of isopod crustaceans (or isopods) along with common woodlice living on land.
