Scientists have developed a diet that, according to their statements, is ideal for the health of the planet and its population
It provides for doubling the consumption of nuts, fruits, vegetables and legumes and reduce meat consumption and sugar twice.
The researchers argue that in a world that would adhere to the diet “Planetary health”, we could prevent 11 million premature deaths per year. It also led to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, save land, water and would contribute to the conservation of biodiversity.
To provide the growing world population, which by 2050 will reach 10 billion people, healthy, sustainable diet will be impossible without changing eating habits, improving food production and reducing food waste, according to Professor of the University of London Tim Lank.
“We seriously need to reform, to rethink the global food system in unprecedented scale,” he said.

In the world
A life-threatening chronic diseases, including obesity, diabetes, malnutrition and some types of cancer are associated with malnutrition. Scientists say that an unhealthy diet is currently causing more deaths and illnesses worldwide than unsafe sex, alcohol, drugs and tobacco combined.
The proposed “ideal” diet is the result of a three year project commissioned by the medical journal Lancet, which was attended by 37 experts from 16 countries.
Researchers talk about the need to reduce consumption of such foods as red meat and sugar by 50 percent and the consumption of nuts, fruits, vegetables and legumes doubled.
Scientists have noted that North Americans consume 6.5 times more than the recommended amount of red meat, while South Asians eat only half of the volume under the planetary diet.
The targets for starchy vegetables, such as potatoes and cassava, will require significant changes in countries of Africa South of the Sahara, where people on average consume these products to 7.5 times more than the recommended amount.
The researchers realize that it would be very ambitious to hope that all people in the world will accept it, not least because of the huge global inequalities in access to food.
“More than 800 million people face food shortages, while even more adhere to an unhealthy diet that contributes to premature deaths and disease,” said Walter Willett.
“If we can’t completely go on this diet, then it’s worth to try and approach it as close as possible”, – he said.
