 Sakurajima volcano woke up in southwestern Japan

The Sakurajima volcano in Kagoshima Prefecture erupted on Wednesday. The local meteorological observatory warned residents within a 2 km radius of the volcano about the danger of lava flows and falling rocks.

According to the Kagoshima meteorological office, the Showa crater eruption, the first since April 2018, was observed at 10:52, and the plumes rose to a height of 1000 meters at 11:10.

Showa Crater is located on the east side of Minamidake and was especially active between 2006 and 2018.
