 Rio de Janeiro favela police raid: 18 killed

The Brazilian police raided one of the favelas (slums) in Rio de Janeiro, which is controlled by a criminal group.

According to the Air Force, 16 of those killed were suspected criminals, the other two victims of the pack were a policeman and a bystander.

Police operations continued all day, causing thousands of people were locked up in their homes.

The police said the aim of the raid was to find and arrest criminals who were planning operations in rival slums.
