Rabbi arrested in Portugal over Abramovich citizenship case

The leader of the Jewish community of the city of Porto (Portugal) Daniel Litvak was detained by the police in the case of the citizenship of businessman Roman Abramovich.

This is reported by Reuters. According to press reports, Daniel Litvak was detained while preparing for a trip to Israel.

Businessman Roman Abramovich received Portuguese citizenship based on a law granting citizenship to the descendants of Sephardic Jews expelled from Portugal many years ago.

It is alleged that it was Rabbi Litvak who issued the document that allowed the oligarch to obtain Portuguese citizenship. The Jewish community denies the accusations.

The prosecutor's office has been investigating the case since January. Reuters sources say Abramovich could be stripped of his citizenship depending on the results of the investigation.
