Powerful new Chinese drone could change air war tactics

China has demonstrated a new large drone at the important Zhuhai air show. The device is capable of flying up to 10,000 km and has a wingspan of 24 meters. It can carry up to 16 munitions, including rockets and bombs.

At the 14th Zhuhai Air Show, Beijing showcased new aircraft, drones and ammunition. Over the past decade, China has become a major player in the military drone market.

Among other innovations, China has unveiled a new large drone. The device is capable of flying up to 10,000 km and has a wingspan of 24 meters. It can stay in the air for up to 40 hours and carry up to 16 munitions, including rockets and bombs.

Modern, cheap and simple delta-wing designs that are actually “loitering munitions”, which means that it is a flying munition similar to a cruise missile has found widespread use on the battlefield. China's decision to introduce the Wing Loong-3 is an attempt to claim that it now has a long-range drone capable of carrying multiple missiles.

The Chinese Wing Loong is supposed to be a more sophisticated version of the American Reaper, as opposed to Iraqi drones, effective but simple devices. It can carry air-to-air missiles PL-10E, which means it can hit helicopters and UAVs. This makes it more interesting than existing counterparts made in Israel or the US.

China's new drones could fundamentally change the tactics of warfare in the air.
