A criminal group operated an underground poultry slaughterhouse in the north of the country for several years, selling chicken to stores across the country — without oversight by government health and tax authorities, Israeli police said on Monday morning.
In connection with the incident, police arrested 12 people and confiscated nine private cars, 11 trucks and industrial vehicles, as well as half a million shekels in cash .
The police suspect that unregistered sales of chicken meat, which were not known to state regulatory authorities, brought in tens of millions of shekels a year for the group.
The suspects are charged with fraudulently obtaining the goods by, as well as aggravated forgery, accepting and giving bribes, money laundering and selling denatured food.
