MPs urged to strengthen political and diplomatic pressure on Russia to stop the policy of assimilation of indigenous peoples.
The Verkhovna Rada appealed to the United Nations, the parliamentary assemblies of the Council of Europe, NATO, OSCE and national parliaments of the world to condemn the violation of the rights of indigenous peoples in the Russian Federation and to enter into connection with these sanctions.
Such a statement at the meeting on Thursday, may 30, was supported by 234 deputies, reports the online edition of the Chronicle.info with reference to the Correspondent.
“The Parliament appeals to the UN, parliamentarians of foreign States and the parliamentary assemblies of international organizations to condemn the actions of the Russian Federation to violations and restrictions of political, civil, national, religious and cultural rights of the indigenous peoples of the Russian Federation as such, which are contrary to recognized principles and norms of international law,” the statement says.

The appeal stressed the need to protect indigenous languages of the Russian Federation and “to demand from the Russian authorities to return to training in their native language and proper language in General educational institutions in full, to eliminate the artificial obstacles to development of the higher education system with indigenous languages”.
