Palestinian sentenced to life for participating in Damascus Gate shooting

An Israeli military court has sentenced a Palestinian to life in prison plus 32 years for his involvement in the 2016 Damascus Gate shooting in Jerusalem that killed a female Maghaw fighter.

Bilal Abu Zaid was convicted of supplying weapons and driving to the attackers who killed 19-year-old Hadar Cohen. The convict must also pay NIS 1.5 million ($430,000) to the Cohen family and an additional NIS 250,000 ($72,000) to another female soldier injured in the attack.

Abu Zayed was not present during the attack itself, because he “wanted to stay alive and continue killing Jews,” military prosecutors quoted him as saying.

The court agreed with the prosecution's position that Abu Zayed was guilty of the attack because for his involvement in planning and execution, although he was not present during the shooting.
