On the basis of “viral factories”: A new “packaging” of biomolecules has been developed in Israel

For the first time in the world, Tel Aviv University has developed a new technology that will control the encapsulation and release of molecules under the influence of ultraviolet light. Researchers believe that the technology will lead to further development delivery systems for the controlled release of biomolecules and drugs in the body using external stimuli using light.

The study was led by doctoral student Itai Katzir under the supervision of Dr. Schmunis at the Wise School of Biological Sciences. The study was published in the prestigious journal Advanced Materials.

The new technology is based on “viral factories”. measles – special fluid formations that the virus forms in the host cell and where all the reactions associated with the formation of new viral particles take place.

Inspired by the viral protein that is responsible for the formation of these “factories”, the researchers developed (short protein), which forms a kind of “viral factories” for "packaging" biomolecules. The researchers said they have incorporated a unique element into the peptide sequence that allows control of the encapsulation and release of molecules by irradiation with ultraviolet light.

This technology opens up possibilities for biomedical and biotechnological applications, including the encapsulation, delivery and release of drugs, proteins, antibodies or other therapeutic molecules in the right place at the right time.
