 Omicron mutations render antibodies ineffective

The University of Minnesota conducted a study that showed that the Omicron strain has a large number of unique specific mutations that allow it to “evade” from pre-existing antibodies in the human body.

This is reported by The Jerusalem Post.

Researchers have found an unprecedented number of mutations in the S-protein of the Omicron – 46 strain, half of which are completely unique and were not found in any of the variants of the virus.

Scientists have found that certain mutations create “interference” on the surface of the virus, which prevent antibodies from binding to the virus cell. Other mutations even result in a complete loss of interaction between antibodies and the virus, thereby rendering the antibodies ineffective against Omicron.

The researchers suggest that immunization (through vaccines or past illness) may no longer provide optimal protection against the strain Omicron.
