New deadly virus: the first victim has already died

In the US, cases of the deadly new Powassan virus have been reported and at least one person has died so far.
According to Fox News Powassan is a rare disease spread by the same ticks that carry Lyme disease.
The Powassan virus was first identified in 1958. It is spread by the bite of the Ixodes scapularis tick. According to official figures, it can take anywhere from a week to one month for symptoms to develop.
A 50-year-old Connecticut resident has been infected with the virus. He felt unwell, he was hospitalized with a disease of the central nervous system. Tests confirmed the presence of antibodies to the Powassan virus. The man has since been discharged and is recovering at home.
The first victim of the virus was an unnamed Maine man who died, according to the Daily Mail.
A Connecticut resident in his 50s also contracted the virus. He felt unwell, he was hospitalized with a disease of the central nervous system. Tests confirmed the presence of antibodies to the Powassan virus. The man has now been discharged and is recovering at home.
The Powassan virus can cause mild flu-like symptoms or lead to severe illness affecting the central nervous system. Approximately one in 10 cases of severe illness is fatal, with about half of those who recover have long-term complications.
