Almost 2.9 million tickets have been sold for the World Cup in Qatar, with about 7% of seats remaining, FIFA and World Cup organizers said on Monday.
The leading country in terms of the number of tickets sold is Mexico. 1.2 million people from the United States, Saudi Arabia and England are expected to travel to Qatar to watch the World Cup matches live.
Additional tickets are expected to be released in a few weeks, FIFA Tournament Director Colin Smith said. at a press conference in Doha with the organizers of the first-ever winter world championship. Tickets are usually available well in advance of the tournament as sponsors and FIFA member associations return tickets that could not be sold.
FIFA also reported that although 420,000 Volunteers for the tournament in Qatar, according to the organizers, were selected only 20,000. Of these, about 2,200 foreign citizens, and the rest of the volunteers will be local.
