NASA: humans will be able to live on the moon this decade

NASA spokesman Howard Hu, who heads the Orion program, said in an interview with the BBC that people will be able to stay on the moon for a long time within this decade. According to him, human habitats on the Earth's satellite will be required in order to support scientific missions.

Hu noted that “the launch of the Space Launch System rocket with the Orion spacecraft as part of the Artemis mission was a historic day for human spaceflight.” The mission is a success, all systems are operational, and the team is gearing up for the next Orion thruster launch on November 21 to place the spacecraft into deep orbit around the Moon.

Orion is currently at a distance of about 134,000 km from the moon. On board the ship there is a special mannequin that will record the impact of the flight on the human body.

“This is the first step we are taking towards long-term exploration of deep space. It is being made not only for the United States, but for the whole world,”, – Howard Hu said. “Watching the rocket take off was an incredible feeling and a dream”, – he added.

Hu also said that NASA is working on a long-term program to land humans on the moon using the Orion spacecraft. According to him, if the current flight of “Artemis” will be successful, the next one will be with the crew. Then a third flight is planned, during which the astronauts will again land on the moon, the first time since the Apollo 17 flight. 50 years ago in December 1972.

A NASA spokesperson admitted that waiting for the return of the ship really causes excitement and feeling: “Wow, we're going back to the moon.”

Recall, November 16, 2022 from the launch pad at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the most powerful rocket in the world flew into space – space launch system. An almost 100-meter rocket launched the Orion spacecraft into space, which will fly around our satellite and return to Earth.
