Ministry of Health: Polio strain similar to London found in Israel

The Ministry of Health has reported the detection of compound poliovirus type 2 in the sewers in the Jerusalem and Bnei Brak area. This is a different strain from the outbreak that occurred earlier. The previous outbreak was caused by a type 3 strain and the vaccination campaign was against it. Samples from Jerusalem are similar to those found recently in New York and London.

In New York a clinical case of paralysis was also diagnosed in a 20-year-old unvaccinated man.

Poliomyelitis — it is a virus that causes paralysis in children, and it has been eradicated in many countries of the world thanks to effective and safe vaccines known for several decades. The Ministry of Health urges parents to continue to ensure that routine vaccinations are carried out in a timely manner to protect the health of children.

The most effective way to protect children from paralysis is the injectable polio vaccine – IPV.

The polio operation will focus on Jerusalem, as that is where the largest number of cases have been found. In the rest of the country – The Ministry of Health recommends vaccinations before the age of 6. To ensure that all children in Jerusalem are vaccinated, an immunization plan has been developed with the municipality.

Thanks to the “2 Drops 2022” vaccination campaign, Immunization coverage of children aged 6 weeks to 1.5 years with IPV vaccine increased from 81% to 99%. Also as a result of the campaign, the percentage of children aged 10 weeks to 1.5 years who were vaccinated with live vaccine in the form of drops increased from 51% to 86% .
