Mine collapse in Burkina Faso leaves at least 9 dead
|News » Incidents
At least nine people died Tuesday when an artisanal gold mine collapsed in Burkina Faso's western Tuy province, the head of the province's artisanal mining association said.
The mine collapsed Tuesday evening and rescue efforts began around 8:00 pm, Abas Dera said on Wednesday.
“At about 11:00 pm, we found four bodies. Then in the morning we found five more, — he said, adding that people still remain in the collapsed mine.
Burkina Faso has many large gold mines run by international companies, as well as hundreds of small unofficial sites that operate without supervision or regulation.
In these so-called artisanal mines, accidents are not uncommon due to non-compliance with safety regulations and rules for operating underground mines.
