Exhibition and sale of documentary photographs by Daniil Mashtakov.
From December 27, before the New Year, an exhibition of documentary photographer Daniil Mashtakov will open in the gallery at Kikar Kdumim 8 in old Jaffa. For the past four years, Daniel has been constantly spending time in one of the places where rarely anyone will go of their own free will. Mea Shearim, one of the first Jewish quarters of Jerusalem outside the Old City. One of the most closed, unknown and incomprehensible to the layman, this area always remains a mystery and keeps its own special charm, conservatively preserving the atmosphere of Jewish shtetls. Daniel's work is an attempt to break down the wall between the viewer and the daily life of the ultra-Orthodox community.
During his constant and regular trips to Mea Shearim, Daniel uses the camera and the classic language of black and white documentary photography as a learning tool. Visiting synagogues, interacting with local residents, immersing in the holidays and reading scientific works about the community helped the author to slightly open these doors, which seemed to be closed to him by default, due to the difference in environments and cultural backgrounds. As part of the exhibition “Mea Shearim” Daniel strives to bring the viewer closer to this experience.
Daniil Mashtakov, a young immigrant from Russia, made aliyah in 2016. Since 2018, she has been professionally engaged in documentary photojournalism and other photo projects. In 2020, he graduated from the school of documentary photography “DocDocDoc” (Saint Petersburg). Since 2021, he has been working as a journalist and radio host at Kang Rek Radio. In his works, he studies the theme of religion and the interaction of ethnic communities in Israel and Palestine. Participant of photo exhibitions, publicist, published in numerous Russian-language and Hebrew-language publications in Russia and Israel. “Mea Shearim” the first author's exhibition of a young photographer.
