Big fire in Gaza, authorities asked for help

Gaza authorities have asked for help in putting out a massive fire that started on Thursday in a landfill in a village on the border with Israel, saying it could last for days and cause an “environmental disaster.” Overnight a large cloud of heavy smoke rose into the sky, and a strong pungent odor spread throughout Gaza City.

“The fire started in the eastern part of the junkyard in Jur al-Dik, southeast of Gaza City, for reasons yet to be confirmed”,– Gaza Municipality said in a statement. “We fear that the fire could spread and cause an environmental disaster.”

The department added that the local fire brigades were unable to cope with the fire. The authorities called on international organizations to help put out the fire and put international pressure on Israel to lift the blockade and let essential equipment through.
