For the first time since 1993, Lebanon recorded its first case of cholera today, Thursday.
The Lebanese News Agency reported that the case was identified yesterday in the countryside of Ahar district on in the north of the country. The patient is receiving treatment and is in a stable condition.
According to doctors, cholera entered Lebanon from Syria, where it has been spreading since last month. later it penetrated the strongholds of the Assad regime in the west of the divided country.
Dozens of patients were found in Aleppo, Damascus, Tartus and other cities. Several deaths were also recorded. The risk group is mainly children and the elderly. World Health Organization real-time warning warned of a regional danger if the disease is not contained.
At the same time, according to the UN, the causes of the disease are associated with water infrastructures that have been neglected and damaged since the start of the civil war in 2011. As a result, residents have to drink contaminated water from the Euphrates River, which flows through Syria.
