An Ashkelon court has extended the detention of an Israeli settler suspected of killing a Palestinian during a fight near Salfit until next Tuesday.
A resident of Samaria, whose identity has not been released, was arrested last Wednesday. Israeli law enforcement authorities suspect him of stabbing 27-year-old Ali Hassan Harb in the heart on the outskirts of the Palestinian village of Iskaka.
The suspect arrived in the area with a group of Israelis intending to build an outpost on the site. Harb and several Palestinians confronted them. According to Palestinian witnesses, a fight soon broke out, during which the settler stabbed Harb in the chest.
Palestinian witnesses say Israeli I police and soldiers were present when the suspect stabbed Harb. The army denied the presence of soldiers at the scene, and the police declined to comment, citing a non-disclosure order.
The suspect's lawyer says his client attacked by a mob of Arabs and he acted in self-defense.
