Israeli judoka Baruch Shmailov won the gold medal at the Judo Masters currently taking place in Jerusalem on Tuesday after beating France's Daiki Buba in the final.
Shmailov's victory was the Israeli team's most notable achievement on the first day of the tournament.
This is the athlete's fourth medal and the first Israeli gold medal.
“I'm happy that I was able to do this for the Israeli fans – the best in the world. They gave me a lot of strength, which I put to good use”, & mdash; he said.
The Judo Masters tournament is the third most important tournament in judo after the Olympic Games and the World Judo Championships. The tournament is considered an important step towards participation in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
< br /> The international tournament brought together more than 400 athletes from all over the world in Israel to participate in a three-day competition at the Pais Arena in the capital.
28-year-old Shmailov, competing in the 66 kg weight category, took fifth place in his category at the Tokyo Olympics last year. In 2018, he won a silver medal at the Judo Masters tournament held in Guangzhou, China.
