Israel: BA.5 strain may be causing spike in COVID cases

In recent days, Israel has seen a sharp increase in cases of coronavirus infection. Over the past week, about 33,000 new cases of coronavirus infection have been registered in the country, an increase of 105 % more than a week earlier.

The sharp surge in coronavirus was also reflected in the R indicator – the infection rate, which reached a value of 1.51.

The number of serious cases also increased slightly, although and insignificant: currently 100 people are in serious condition, according to The Jerusalem Post. At the same time, there has not been a significant jump in deaths from COVID: every day for the past month, one or two people died from coronavirus-related causes.

The reason for the sharp spike in cases has not yet been confirmed, but it may be the same cause as in other countries – variant BA.5 Omicron.

BA.5 is more contagious than other strains, but causes a milder form of the disease.

Recall that the Israeli Ministry of Health previously recommended wearing masks indoors.
