The United Arab Emirates and Israel unveiled their first jointly developed unmanned vessel on Monday, indicating their growing military ties as maritime threats rise in the Gulf region. The joint development was the KATANA unmanned boat A USV equipped with advanced sensors and imaging systems designed for surveillance, reconnaissance and mine detection and designed to fend off drone and missile attacks on the busy shipping lanes of the Persian Gulf.
The ship was unveiled off the coast of Abu Dhabi during the Naval Defense and Marine NAVDEX security. The USV was created by Israel Aerospace Industries IAI and the Emirati defense consortium EDGE.
“We are demonstrating for the first time a joint project that demonstrates the capabilities and strengths of both companies in securing the coastline and countering mine threats”,– said Oren Guter, head of the IAI naval program.
According to Guter, the ships will counter “threats here in this area”, but the goal was also to deploy them overseas.< br /> The head of IAI also said that the company is committed to strengthening cooperation with the UAE in the field of air defense and hopes to help the Emirates improve its naval capabilities.
