Iran launched a massive crackdown on the Kurdish-populated city, where protests against the regime have intensified in the past few days. Iranian forces sent reinforcements to the city of Mahabad in western Iran. Videos of massive shelling of protesters overnight flooded social media. A 9-year-old child was reportedly killed in a tank attack.

The very first demonstrations against the wearing of the hijab took place in these Kurdish-populated areas, including the funeral of Mahsa Amini in her hometown of Sakez, after which they spread throughout country.

Human rights groups report that at least 378 people, 47 of whom were children, have died in the crackdown on protests.
