A riot broke out in the central prison of the Iranian city of Karaj, protesting against the transfer of a prisoner to solitary confinement before execution.
One of the prisoners was shot dead during the riots, another more than a dozen were wounded.
The IHR alleges that the prisoners chanted anti-regime slogans, including “Death to the dictator,” referring to Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The group also said that the prisoners blocked the entrances to the Karaj prison and broke the surveillance cameras.
The Times of Israel reports that the Iranian authorities have presented a different version of events, stating that between prisoners convicted of drug-related crimes, a conflict erupted when one person was killed after a stone was thrown at him.
